the work of Equifava.
The Mission Statement.
Equifava, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sourcing, documentation
and digitizing of film and video focusing on the history, knowledge and heritage
of the horse and horse cultures throughout the world, and the creation of a free,
easily accessible online Video Archive dedicated to the equine.
Equifava and its volunteers research, locate, acquire, restore, digitize and catalog
every type of moving image available today, including but not limited to videos,
feature films, newsreels and television programs that can be identified, selected
and viewed within a searchable keyword database.
The equestrian world is rapidly losing images of great horses, legendary riders, respected trainers, extraordinary performances, events, competitions, documentaries and even feature films and 'Saturday morning' serials. With the loss of these materials, the horse industry and equestrian communities throughout the world lose an important part of their heritage and past.
Since the invention of the motion picture camera in the late 1890's, the ability to capture the image and movement of the horse and its relationship with people has fascinated film makers and educators around the world. In more recent times, the evolution of video tape technology expanded the opportunities for individuals and companies to create informative, educational, and entertaining images covering all aspects of the equine.
Over the last one hundred years, thousands of hours of film and video have been produced documenting the horse and the people who admired, loved or simply appreciated the wonderful creature which has been mankind's companion and ally throughout history.
Much of the film from the early years has been lost or is rapidly deteriorating. Even video materials created in the last thirty years are at risk of disappearing because of the fragility of video tape and the absence of any focused effort to preserve them.
Equifava's goal is to identify and preserve these films and videos, so that generations to come will be able to appreciate and enjoy the extraordinary equine heritage which has been documented over the past one hundred years.
From step-to-step methods of training horses to pull army artillery in World War I to record-breaking performances across a wide-array of equestrian disciplines and pursuits, the ever-expanding Archive is a comprehensive source of information and knowledge about the horse.
The Archive is hosted on the PegasusTV.org website, and provides access to many hundreds of hours of on-demand content.
Funding for the organization is generated through donations, sponsorship and advertising fees.
Equifava also provides guidance and expertise to producers seeking production funds and distribution, and functions as an international catalyst providing a continual flow of video-based education and information among horse people of all nations.
